An Imam was selling his horse in the market. An interested buyer came to him and requested if he could get a test drive. The Imam told the man that this horse is unique. In order to make it walk, you have to say Subhanallah. To make it run, you have to say Alhamdulillah and to make it stop, you have to say Allahu Akbar. The man sat on the horse and said Subhanallah. The horse started to walk. Then he said Alhamdulillah and it started to run. He kept saying Alhamdulillah and the horse started running faster and faster. All of a sudden the man noticed that the horse is running towards the edge of the hill that he was riding on. Being overly fearful, he forgot how to stop the horse. He kept saying all these words out of confusion. When the horse was just near the edge, he remembered Allahu Akbar and said it out loud. The horse stopped just one step away from the edge. The man took a deep breath, looked up towards the sky and said Alhamdulillah!

A fascinating study by an engaging scholar-activist, this book provides a good cross-section of the critical issues in comparative religion between Islam, Judaism, Christianity and other faiths. The book begins by describing the human capacity to understand divine transcendence in all religion and defines the world communities (Ummahs) of various religions. It then compares the rights of religious minorities under Islam with the rights of Muslims in non-Muslim societies. A contrast of Muslim da'wah and Christian missionary work is also presented. Throughout the book, the author uses theological and doctrinal issues such as original sin to examine similarities and differences between the faiths.

This book, Trialogue of the Abrahamic Faiths, edited by the late Dr. Isma ‘il R. al Faruqf, is certain to be hailed as a historic milestone in Muslim-Christian-Jewish dialogue. Perhaps not since the early Middle Ages when the grand courts of Damascus, Baghdad, and Qurtubah (Cordova) witnessed numerous dialogues and debates between the adherents of these three Abrahamic faiths has there been a such suc-cessful effort made by religious scholars to communicate with one another on matters of faith and understanding. This book, readers may note, goes beyond the modern-day osten-sible studies in comparative religion, and each of the contributing scholars evinces an appreciation and more-than-cursory knowledge of all three faiths. The authors take up three major topics: The Other Faiths, The Nation-State as Form of Social Organization, and The Faith-Community as a Transnational Actor for Justice and Peace. Respectively, Jewish, Christian, and Muslim contributors offer their enlightened perspectives on the subject matter under each major topic. As Dr. al Faruqi points out in his introduction, this book had its in-ception when the American Academy of Religion (AAR) decided at its 1399/1979 convention to approach the Muslim-Jewish-Chrisitian Conference in an effort to sponsor a major dialogue on the Abrahamic faiths. The result is now history, and this book, which is a record of the statements presented at this conference, is a first step in this process which requires information about and understanding of the perspectives of the faiths concerned. He concluded that this publica-tion is an “act” of comparative religion “certain to open avenues for future thought and discussion,” and which hopefully will be followed by other scholars of the three faiths.
